OneSpace Modeling FAQ: Operating systems

While filesystems are recommended or supported with OneSpace Modeling?

CoCreate does not make explicit statements about filesystem compatibility. However, NTFS and FAT filesystems are, of course, perfectly safe to use and have been thoroughly tested with OneSpace Modeling.

The usual recommendation for professional systems is to use NTFS because of its superior security handling and because it supports large disks more efficiently than FAT.

There have been numerous reports from users who successfully run Samba in conjunction with OneSpace Modeling. Samba is useful in environments with UNIX- or Linux-based fileservers. CoCreate also works with Samba internally.

There have also been positive reports from users who store and load OneSpace Modeling data via NFS. In particular, DiskAccess/DiskShare (now AccessNFS) and UNIXlink97 have been mentioned.

Which service packs or patches are recommended for the operating system I use?

For up-to-date configuration information, look up CoCreate's detailled system requirement documents for Windows and HP-UX.

Windows service packs are explicitly tested together with OneSpace Modeling, but not all permutations of hotfixes (individual, smaller patches from Microsoft) will be tested. However, problems which are specific for OneSpace Modeling-specific and are introduced by OS patches are rare. If you encounter one, consult the user forums or contact CoCreate support.

Will OneSpace Modeling run on Windows XP Home?

CoCreate does not officially support the Home Edition of Windows XP, but we have heard from several users that they are working successfully with OneSpace Modeling on this platform. This is not too surprising, of course, considering that the two operating systems share the same system kernel and driver architecture. However, they differ significantly in the areas of security, permissions and user/group management.

When hovering over an icon in OneSpace Modeling, I get the next icon's tooltip text, or the tooltip text is cut off.

This is a known issue in Windows XP when running OpenGL-based applications (i.e. most 3D CAD applications are affected) - see Microsoft's Knowledge Base article.

Try one of the following:

  • Install the hotfix described in the KB article
  • Install Windows XP SP2
  • Rename the SolidDesigner.exe.manifest file in the binNT subdirectory of the OneSpace Modeling installation. (This way, you'll lose parts of the XP UI look, though.)

Was kann man tun?

  • Windows XP Service Pack 2 installieren

Whenever I start OneSpace Modeling, my mouse slows down - what's going on?

Some mouse drivers detect when a 3D application starts; more precisely, any application which uses DirectX or OpenGL. In that case, they switch off mouse acceleration. The idea is that when playing games, you don't really want progressive mouse acceleration since this makes it harder to control the game. Since the mouse driver doesn't really know which applications are games, it simply assumes that anything which uses 3D might be a game, and then switches off the acceleration.

This was reported first for certain Logitech mouse drivers. See the description of the Logitech Mouseware Advanced Settings Utility to learn how to configure the mouse driver while 3D applications are running.

Will OneSpace Modeling run on Windows XP x64 Edition?

OneSpace Modeling 2005 can be installed on Windows XP x64 and will run on it just fine. OneSpace Modeling 2005 is still a 32-bit application; however, due to the architecture of Windows XP x64, it will be able to use up to 4 GB of virtual memory on such a system, which is quite a significant improvement over Windows XP for 32-bit systems (where the upper limit is 3 GB).

A full 64-bit version will ship with OneSpace Modeling 2006.

OneSpace Modeling becomes unstable under Windows XP/SP2 after switching from Modeling to Annotation and back for 40 or 50 times.

This is an issue which can occur on systems with Windows XP and Service Pack 2. Windows in OneSpace Modeling are drawn only partially; icons are not redrawn properly; a message appears stating that "a required resource was not available" etc.

This is a known problem in the operating system; it runs out of so-called GDI objects. Microsoft describes the problem at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;319740 and provides a hotfix upon request. (Update: There is now a download link for the hotfix directly from the Knowledge Base Article.)

The problem is probably not limited to Annotation and may also occur when switching to other applications within OneSpace Modeling.

Will OneSpace Modeling run under Windows Vista?

At the time of writing this (early April 2007), CoCreate does not support OneSpace Modeling on Windows Vista yet. There are known problems in the application itself. Also, there are still a few issues with 3D graphics drivers which are available at this point.

CoCreate is working on resolving these issues, and will release a Vista version of OneSpace Modeling soon. This Vista version will be based on OneSpace Modeling 2007 (v15) and will be fully compatible with it.

Is is true that OpenGL is no longer supported under Windows Vista?

Short answer: No.

Full answer: The rumours that you may have been hearing are based on misunderstandings and incomplete information.

As in previous versions of Windows, Microsoft ships a default OpenGL driver with Vista; this OpenGL driver kicks in if the graphics card doesn't have its own driver. Microsoft's OpenGL driver is now based on OpenGL 1.4 (previously 1.1), and it even uses hardware acceleration (which it didn't before, or only to a minimal degree). In that sense, Microsoft's OpenGL support in Windows Vista is actually better than it was ever before.

For full OpenGL performance, however, graphics card vendors need to update their OpenGL drivers for Windows Vista. This is essentially the same situation as with earlier operating system releases. However, Microsoft introduced a new model for writing graphics driver with Windows Vista, which vendors now need to adopt. One of the significant differences in the new driver model is the new window composition technology used in Vista's Aero look, which is a new concept in the Windows world and therefore takes some time to fully support and implement in OpenGL drivers. (As or early April 2007, we still don't have final OpenGL drivers for all the major graphics cards.)

Additional information:

Will man volle OpenGL-Leistung, braucht man allerdings OpenGL-Treiber vom Grafikkartenhersteller.
