CoCreate Modeling FAQ: Introduction (Einführung)

On CoCreate Modeling

CoCreate Modeling (previously also known as SolidDesigner, then as OneSpace Designer Modeling and OneSpace Modeling) is a high-end 3D solid modeller. I happen to like it a lot, but then, this should not come as a shock considering that I worked for CoCreate (which was recently acquired by PTC). If you need general information on CoCreate Modeling or on our other products, check out http://www.ptc.com/products/cocreate/.

On Wikis and TWiki

Wikis are fantastic tools which allow everyone to freely contribute to a web site. You can add content or edit existing content without requiring access to the web site through more conventional means such as ftp accounts. Basically, you edit a TWiki page (sometimes also called a "topic") directly in your browser window, without having to use any other applications, such as HTML editors, ftp clients etc. TWiki accepts HTML-formatted text, but also provides a special shorthand notation which makes it trivial to get your contributions formatted correctly.

If you want to learn how powerful this collaborative concept is, visit http://wikipedia.org which, with the help of thousands of contributors from all over the world, has become one of most complete and precise encyclopedias on the planet.

This site uses TWiki as its Wiki implementation. If you're a first-time user, see WelcomeGuest for an excellent introduction into what TWiki is and how it works.

How do I add an entry or edit an existing one?

To contribute, you need to register once with the site. Go to TWikiRegistration to fill in your user data, including a password which you will later need to edit topics. The password is stored in encrypted format, so noone will ever see it but yourself. Make sure that your email address is correct because TWiki will send maintenance and notification messages to it.

Contributions can be made in several ways:

  • Direct editing (the Wiki Way) using the "Edit" link at the bottom of each TWiki page.
  • Adding a comment using the comment box at the bottom of each FAQ page
  • If everything else fails, send in your contributions to twikiadmin@clausbrodWeAreNotAmusedAboutSpam.de

If you need to learn more, I can hardly come up with anything better than the introduction at WelcomeGuest. TWikiShorthand lists the most important shorthand rules if you do not want to use HTML syntax.

If even TWikiShorthand is too much reading for you, here's an even more compressed summary:

  • Start new paragraph with a blank line
  • *bold text* -> bold text; _italic text_ -> italic text; =monospaced text= -> monospaced text
  • HTTP, ftp, mail addresses are automatically converted into links: http://www.clausbrod.de, ftp://ftp.cocreate.com, twikiadmin@clausbrodWeAreNotAmusedAboutSpam.de
  • Start a line with 3 spaces and an asterisk to create a list item
  • To upload an image and refer to it, click "Attach" link at the bottom of a page, specify the image file and check the "Create a link to the attached file" option.
  • Enclose formatted text (such as program code) in a <verbatim> / </verbatim> pair
  • Three consecutive hyphens expand into a horizontal rule: ---

  • *Fettschrift* -> Fettschrift; _Kursivschrift_ -> Kursivschrift; =Sperrsatz= -> Sperrsatz
Am besten gleich "Create a link to the attached file" mit auswählen.

I'm not sure if I understood all this correctly, and I'm scared to break stuff on this site.

When in doubt, check out the Sandbox subweb. It's only purpose is to allow people to test TWiki. Just go to a page (for example Sandbox.TestTopic1), add a few markup tags and/or text, and see what the page looks like after your changes.

When editing a "real" page, use the "Preview" button to check your changes before finally submitting them.

Conventions for contributions to this site

Contributors are expected to use TWiki syntax or TWiki-compatible HTML syntax. Check out TextFormattingRules for an introduction. Contributions in other formats will be tolerated, but documents in TWiki syntax are preferred because they allow everyone to easily edit and improve them.

I will ruthlessly delete all derogative or insulting contributions or edits, as well as content which is unlawful or violates copyrights. After all, this is my web site. I pay for it, I will get sued for it, so in the end I get to decide about its content. If you feel this is censorship, well, you're free to publish elsewhere.

Please stay away from religious issues ("My CAD modeller is cooler than yours", "Windoze rulez"). Also, please stay on topic. This site primarily deals with CoCreate Modeling. Discussions on related products are welcome, but we don't really want to learn about the latest games, cool macros in Word, or what you think about politics.

Do not duplicate information which can also be found elsewhere, but rather link to it, maybe adding a few words of introduction.

The "default" language is English. If English is not your native language, do not let this intimidate you. Contributions in other languages, especially German, are welcome. Most articles have already been translated into German. Volunteers are most welcome to translate existing content into other languages and keep the translated versions up to date.

Learning how to use CoCreate Modeling

CoCreate Modeling ships with extensive online help documentation. The best way to start is "Help/Getting Started".

The best option to learn CoCreate Modeling probably is to participate in a professional training session or seminar. The tutor's experience will save you a lot of time finding your way around in the software. Trainings and seminars are available both from PTC (http://www.cocreate.com/training) and CoCreate partners.

Another great option is to participate in CoCreate webcasts, which are online demonstrations usually targeted on new features in the software. Additional demo videos are available from http://www.cocreate.com/demo.cfm.

"Technical Update Trainings" and self-paced tutorials are available from http://www.cocreate.com/learn. Also, CoCreate Modeling Personal Edition (which is the free limited edition for personal use) comes with its own set of tutorials which will help to get you started.

CoCreate Modeling Personal Edition is a great way to start learning about dynamic modeling in general and CoCreate Modeling in particular. The software is free and runs indefinitely. Personal Edition does not have all the bells and whistles of the commercial version, but for learning purposes, this can actually be quite helpful because it helps to focus on the essentials.

You can register for the "CoCreate News" newsletter at CoCreate (http://www.cocreate.com/newsletter). This monthly newsletter regularly features tips and tricks for CoCreate software.

CoCreate Modeling lernen
